description Different aspects of cassava cultivation in the Dominican Republic are described, namely edaphoclimatic regions, production, trade, consumption, production systems, var., and uses. Production constraints include inadequate land preparation, limited use of recommended agronomic practices, diseases and pests, var. mixtures, and limited use of var. adapted to regional conditions, deficient weed control, low application of fertilization, inadequate association of cassava in multiple cropping systems, and early harvest. Both the Centro Sur de Desarrollo Agropecuario and the Centro Norte de Desarrollo Agropecuario have cassava plant breeding programs; main activities are maintenance of international and national collections; morphological classification of var., development of lines through polycrosses and directed crosses, introduction of lines in the form of sexual seed or meristem tissues, and assessment of var. and lines regarding yield and response to negative facotrs. Background information is given on both research programs and their current status is analyzed. A basic structure exists to receive from CIAT germplasm in the form of meristem tissue cultures. Future plans include increased cassava cultivation for a total of 21,699 ha; increased production destined to animal nutrition and starch production; and strengthening of the services distributing planting material, mechanization, and agricultural extension. (CIAT) Se describen diferentes aspectos del cultivo de la yuca en la Republica Dominicana, a saber: regiones edafoclimaticas, produccion, comercio, consumo, sistemas de produccion, var. y usos. Las limitaciones a la produccion incluyen deficiente preparacion del suelo, uso limitado de practicas agronomicas recomendadas, enfermedades y plagas, mezcla de var. y uso limitado de var. adaptadas a las condiciones regionales, deficiente control de malezas, falta de fertilizacion, asociaciones incorrectas de la yuca en cultivos multiples y cosecha temprana. Tanto el Centro Sur de Desarrollo Agropecuario como el Centro Norte de Desarrollo Agropecuario tienen programas de mejoramiento en yuca; las principales actividades son el mantenimiento de las colecciones nacional e internacional; la clasificacion morfologica de las var.; la obtencion de lineas mediante policruzamiento o cruzamiento dirigido; la introduccion de lineas en forma de semilla sexual o tejido de meristemas; y la evaluacion de var. y lineas por rendimiento y por reaccion a factores negativos. Se dan los antecedentes y se analiza la situacion actual de los 2 programas de investigacion. Se cuenta con una estructura basica para recibir del CIAT germoplasma en forma de tejidos de meristemas. Planes futuros incluyen el fomento de la siembra de yuca para un total de 21,699 ha; el aumento de la produccion destinada al consumo de animales y a la produccion de almidon; y el refuerzo de los servicios de distribucion de material de siembra, mecanizacion y extension agricola.
