description Five soil types on which cassava is being planted were investigated. Almost all these soils are degraded in terms of soil properties, especially with respect to soil fertility. Cassava is traditionally planted without fertilizer application and soil conservation measures, resulting in a negative nutrient balance. In experiments on the application of mineral fertilizers, cassava yields increased by 20- 11 2 % compared to the control treatment. The combination of organic manures, mineral fertilizers and contour hedgerows to reduce erosion, increased cassava and intercropped peanut yields on average 43-46% compared to the application of organic fertilizers only. The nutrient balance in these areas was positive, with high income and low soil erosion.
