(CIAT) Se discuten ampliamente aspectos relacionados con los programas de mejoramiento genetico de la yuca, el impacto de estrategias pasadas y los resultados experimentales relacionados con estas. Aunque se han identificado fuentes de resistencia a la mayoria de las enfermedades y plagas, ademas de la tolerancia a factores edaficos y climaticos adversos, es muy dificil combinar estos caracteres en una sola var. Por tanto, el enfasis se ha concentrado en la identificacion de lineas tolerantes a varios factores negativos de la produccion (FNP). En los ecosistemas de Popayan y Carimagua se han obtenido clones resistentes a algunos FNP (edaficos, climaticos y fitopatologicos). Se recomienda descentralizar los programas de mejoramiento para producir var. con amplio rango de resistencia a la mayoria de los FNP.
