Hybridization or crossing constitutes the principal means for genetic improvement of plants. Basic concepts of the morphology of the bean flower, floral bud, self-fertilization, emasculation, hybridization or crossing, materials and equipment used are reviewed. The following techniques are described: hybridization by emasculation with the stigma covered and uncovered, and hybridization without emasculation. (CIAT) Esta unidad audiotutorial (cinta magnetofonica, guion, 149 transparencias a color, guia de estudio, auto-evaluacion), preparada por la Unidad de Comunicaciones del CIAT, esta disponible para uso en sincronizacion automatica o manual por medio de un proyector de transparencias y una grabadora de cassettes. Cada unidad esta disponible en al Oficina de Distribucion a un costo de US$$50; en el Centro de Informacion sobre Frijol solamente pueden solicitarse fotocopias de la guia de estudio. La hibridacion o cruzamiento constituye el principal medio para el mejoramiento genetico de las plantas. Se revisan conceptos basicos sobre la morfologia de la flor del frijol, el boton floral, la autofecundacion, la emasculacion, la hibridacion o cruzamiento y los materiales y equipo empleados. Se describen las siguientes tecnicas: hibridacion por emasculacion con el estigma cubierto y desnudo e hibridacion sin emasculacion.
