Sumario:The origin, agronomic characteristics, and root productivity of cassava cv. Mae Joana (IM-175) and Zolhudinha (IM-158) are given; the performance of these root rot-resistant cv. was outstanding throughout 9 trials carried out with 258 other cv. to determine appropriate cv. for the varzea area of the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Recommended cultural practices are indicated. Yields of cv. Mae Joana, averaged over 3 seasons, were 19.24 t/ha in monoculture (spaced at 1.0 x 1.0 m) and 17.32 and 18.60 t/ha when intercropped (spaced at 2.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 and 2.0 x 0.6 m, resp.). Corresponding av. yields for cv. Zolhudinha were 33.2, 18.6, and 28.57 t/ha. (CIAT)
