Of the farmers surveyed, 88 percent always plant white yam with cassava, and among these, 13 percent intercrop yam/cassava/maize. Cassava seed is usually stored in the field, shaded by trees, and fresh seed is usually used. Planting takes place after yam, from April to July. Var. generally intercropped with white yam are Blancamona, Venezolana, or a combination of both. Mean plant density is 2492 cassava plants/ha, always being lower than that of white yam. Cassava harvesting is undefined; harvests have been reported on a monthly basis. Labor input/ha of cassava harvested averages 16 workdays. Cassava prices vary more than yam prices. The time distribution of the different operations involved is indicated and possible areas of future research, discussed. (CIAT) |
