Sumario:This study characterizes the production systems prevalent in the Francisco de Orellana district, Napo Province, in northeast Ecuador. The study documents the distribution of resources, productivity in pastures, crops, and tree crops, and incomes of small farms on three types of soils. The main constraints to intensifying production systems in this humid tropical region are specified. Lines of research in production systems are suggested, together with actions for development, as are needed by the settler-producers in Ecuador`s Lower Selva. The requirements of this fragile ecoystem are also discussed.
