Quantitative trait loci for resistance to gastro-intestinal nematode infections in mice

Genome-wide quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping was used to evaluate the genetic basis of resistance to Helgmosomides polygyrus in an F2 cross of SWR and CBA mouse strains that are resistant and susceptible, respectively, to infection. 25 significant QTL affecting at least one of the resistance t...

description Genome-wide quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping was used to evaluate the genetic basis of resistance to Helgmosomides polygyrus in an F2 cross of SWR and CBA mouse strains that are resistant and susceptible, respectively, to infection. 25 significant QTL affecting at least one of the resistance traits i.e. faecal egg count at three measurement times, total worm count, granuloma score and immunoglobulin E and G1 titres. It was shown that 15 QTL were associated with more than one resistance trait, suggesting either pleiotropy or tight linkage as major mechanisms of the QTL for gastrointestinal resistance. The combined additive effects for the 5 QTL for total worm count accounted for about 60% of the difference between the parental lines.
