Sumario:This paper presents the results of a comparative study conducted to characterize the oestrous phenonenon in Zebu and crossbred cattle and to determine oestrus detection using both androgenized cows and entire bulls. The study was conducted at ILRI Debre Zeit Research Station during the dry season. Cows grazed on natural pasture and were fed supplemental wheat bran and molasses. Cows destined for culling were selected for androgenization. Cows which manifested stronger male behaviour were subsequently injected Duratestone. These cows were used for oestrus detection. Some cows were treated with prostaglandin to clear them from any endometritis. Daily blood samples were collected. Progesterone concentrations on the day of oestrons were determined and progesterone profiles plotted for each cow to explain reproductive patterns and data were compared with oestrus detection by teaser animals. The results of the study are presented.
