To identify species and biotypes of these insects, 78 biological samples were taken in 15 different localities. Samples were taken to the laboratory and the species and biotypes were identified by means of fourth instar morphology. electrophoresis for ?-? esterases and RAPD-PCR analysis. Insecticide use patterns were determined by interviewing 56 farmers. Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (73% of total samples taken) was the predominant species attacking tomatoes, snap beans, cucumber, squash, eggplant, dry beans, and pepper. The A biotype of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (15.5% of samples taken) was found on cotton and soybeans. The B biotype, also known as B. argentifolii Bellows and Perring, (11.5%) was registered as a pest of poinsettas grown under greenhouse conditions. Farmers are using 30 different active ingredients of insecticides to control whiteflies. Of these, 46% are organophosphates, 23% are insect growth regulators, 20% are carbamates, and 10% are pyrethroids. The mean number of applications per cropping season is 10. All farmers spray on a preventative basis with little or no regard for pest infestation levels. Tomato is the most heavily sprayed crop, usually every 2-5 days. Few farmers (14%) receive some kind of technical assistance and 71% do not take precautionary measures when using toxic insecticides. |

La situación de moscas blancas como plagas de cultivos semestrales en el Valle del Cauca se diagnosticó entre septiembre de 1997 y agosto de 1998. Se tomaron 78 muestras biológicas en 15 municipios, las cuales se identificaron por morfología del cuarto ínstar ninfal, electroforesis de ?-? esterasas y RAPD s-PCR. También se estableció el patrón de uso de insecticidas para el control de moscas blancas por medio de 56 encuestas hechas a agricultores en los municipios visitados. Se encontró a Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) como especie dominante (73%) en tomate, habichuela, pepino, zapallo, berenjena, frijol y pimentón. Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotipo A (15.5%) se registró en algo dón y soya. El biotipo B, conocido por algunos como B. argentifolii Bellows y Perring (11.5%), se halló en poinsetias bajo invernadero. Los agricultores mencionaron 39 marcas comerciales de insecticidas (30 ingredientes activos) para el control de moscas blancas. La mayoría correspondió a organofosforados (46%) seguidos por reguladores de crecimiento (23%), carbamatos (20%) y piretroides (10%). El prome dio de aplicaciones tipo calendario por período vegetativo es de 10. En tomate, un caso extremo, se registraron aplicaciones de insecticidas cada dos o tres días en dosis superiores a las recomendadas.
