description Snap bean yield losses caused by the Trialeurodes vaporariorum-Thrips palmi complex were measured in three experiments conducted in the Pradera region of the Cauca Valley (Colombia) at an altitude of 980 m above sea level and 23 degrees C. The first two trials had an experimental design of randomized complete blocks with four repetitions and six treatments. Treatments were differential chemical control regimes so that potential losses caused by thrips, by whiteflies and by the complex could be measured. Residual and marginal losses were also measured. A 4 x 4 latin square design was used In a third trial in which an absolute check was compared with whitefly and thrips control, whitefly control, and thrips control. In the first two trials mean potential losses due to the whitefly-thrips complex were 44.5% (range: 39-53%); losses due to thrips averaged 28.4% (range: 25-35%); the whitefly caused average losses of 16% (range: 14-18%). In the third trial, losses caused by the whitefly-thrips complex, by thrips alone and by the whitefly alone averaged 47.4, 30.9 and 16.5%, respectively. Residual losses (those incurred by the farmer following his own methods of control) were 14% (range: 8-22%). Marginal losses (those occurring when an action threshold for whiteflies is used) averaged 27% (range: 23-33%).

Para medir las pérdidas causadas por el complejo Thaleurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) y Thrips palmi Karny en habichuela bajo las condiciones agroecológicas del Valle del Cauca se realizaron tres ensayos de campo en la zona hortícola del municipio de Pradera a una altitud de 980 metros y 23°C. En los dos primeros se usó un diseño experimental de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones y seis tipos de manejo que permitieran diferenciar en forma independiente las pérdidas potenciales causadas por T. palmi, por T. vaporariorum y por el complejo, así como las pérdidas residuales que puede sufrir el agricultor con su manejo y las marginales cuando se usa como criterio de control un umbral de acción previamente establecido para T. vaporariorum. En el tercer ensayo se usó un cuadrado Latino 4 x 4 con cuatro tratamientos: Control de mosca blanca y trips, control de mosca blanca, control de trips y testigo. Cuando se hizo el análisis de interacción entre ensayos (épocas) no se encontraron diferencias estadísti cas entre los dos primeros, pero sí entre éstos y el tercero. En los dos primeros ensayos las pérdidas causadas por el complejo fueron del 44.5% (rango: 39-53%); por T. palmi, del 28.4% (rango: 25-35%) y por T. vaporariorum del 16% (rango: 14-18%). En el tercer ensayo, las pérdidas potenciales por el complejo fueron del 47.4%; por trips, del 30.9% y por mosca blanca del 16.5%. Resultados éstos similares a los encontrados para el promedio de los dos primeros ensayos.
