| description | Previously unknown viral diseases have been observed in past months in different regions of the Cauca Valley, Colombia, affecting snap bean and tomato plantings. The affected snap bean plants show severe leaf malformation (crumpling) and mild variegation. The diseased tomato plants show moderate degrees of mosaic and leaf malformation. Some tomato samples were obtained in Fusagasuga, Cundinamarca, central Colombia. These samples showed foliar yellowing and moderate leaf malformation. Serological tests and PCR amplification of viral nucleic acids using begomovirus-specific primers, revealed the presence of two new begomovirus species in snap bean (Bean leaf crumple virus) and tomato (Tomato mild mosaic virus). The tomato samples from central Colombia contained a known begomovirus species (Tomato yellow mosaic virus) originally described from Venezuela; and some samples also contained aphid-borne potyviruses. The unexpected outbreak of these whitefly-borne begomoviruses is discussed here with a view to adopting effective virus control measures. |

Se han presentado brotes de enfermedades virales antes desconocidas en habichuela y en tomate en varios municipios del Valle del Cauca. Las habichuelas presentan un arrugamiento foliar severo y amarillamiento moderado, mientras que el tomate muestra síntomas moderados de mosaico y deformación foliar. También se observó una nueva enfermedad viral en tomate en el municipio de Fusagasugá, Cundinamarca. Las plantas afectadas muestran un mosaico amarillo y deformación foliar. Pruebas serológicas y de amplificación de ácidos nucléicos revelaron la presencia de geminivirus transmitidos por la mosca blanca Bemisia tabaci (begomovirus). Secuencias parciales de clones seleccionados de los fragmentos amplificados por PCR, mostraron la presencia de dos especies nuevas de begomovirus en habichuela (Virus del arrugamiento foliar del frijol), y en tomate (Virus del mosaico suave del tomate) en el Valle del Cauca. Las secuencias obtenidas de la muestra de tomate de Fusagasugá, demuestra que el begomovirus detectado es el Virus del mosaico amarillo del (ornate, originalmente descrito en Venezuela. En algunas de las muestras de tomate, también se encontraron potyvirus y un cucumovirus.
