description Some wilted plants of Zornia sp. have been observed in CIAT experimental station of Quilichao, Cauca, Colombia, in 1980 and 1981. Bacteria later identified as Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens were isolated from these plants. This record and subsequent risk for disease free multiplication plots incited the Germplasm Health Laboratory of CIAT Genetic Resources Unit to undertake this study. The purpose of this research was to verify whether Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens was still present or not. Two kinds of plant material were investigated: seeds of 37 Zornia accessions of the GRU harvested in the CIAT stations at Quilichao and Palmira in the period 1979-2000, and plants from the multiplication plots. Isolation, staining and biochemical testing for seed and plant tissues were done according to standard procedures. Only four out of the 37 accessions showed seed Gram positive bacterial isolates that grew at 37oC. These accessions were Zornia brasiliensis 8025 harvest Palmira 1983A, Z. brasiliensis 8849 harvest Palmira 1983A, Zornia glabra 286 harvest Santander de Quilichao 1982 A y Z. glabra 14263 harvest Palmira 2000 A. The remaining 33 accessions did not show Gram positive bacterial isolates. In conclusion the preliminary results show that Gram positive bacterial isolates possibly of the Coryneform group can be found associated with seeds of Zornia, but without affinity with Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens subject to quarantine restrictions.

En el CIAT, Centro Experimental, Estación de Santander de Quilichao, (Cauca, Colombia) durante 1980 y 1981 se observó la presencia de marchitez en plantas de Zornia spp., asociada a Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens. En razón de ese registro y del riesgo que implicaba su presencia en uno de los sitios de multiplicación de leguminosas forrajeras libres de patógenos de interés cuarentenario, se adelanté el presente estudio por parte del Laboratorio de Sanidad de Germoplasma (LSG) de la Unidad de Recursos Genéticos (URG) durante el año 2000. Se buscaba verificar si aún estaba presente Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens para tomar las precauciones del caso. Para la investigación se utilizaron semillas de 37 accesiones de Zornia spp. procedentes del Banco de Germoplasma cosechadas en las Estaciones del CIAT en Santander de Quilichao y Palmira desde 1979 hasta el primer semestre de 2000, además de plantas de Zornia spp. en los lotes de multiplicación. Se realizaron los aislamientos según los procedimientos establecidos, tanto de semillas como de tejidos. A las colonias bacteriales obtenidas se les realizaron las tinciones y pruebas bioquímicas recomendadas. Solamente cuatro de las 37 accesiones mostraron en los análisis de semillas aislamientos bacteriales Gram-positivos y crecimiento a 37 °C. Dichas accesiones fueron: Zornia brasiliensis 8025 cosecha de Palmira 1983A, Z. brasiliensis 8849 cosecha en Palmira 1983A, Zornia glabra 286 de Santander de Quilichao 1982 A y Z glabra 14263 de Palmira 2000 A. Las otras 33 no mostraron aislamientos bacteriales Gram-positivos.
