description During its first two years, the African trypanosome genome project, funded in part by the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), has concentrated on three fundamental areas: (1) gene discovery by single-pass sequencing of cDNAs to produce expressed sequence tags (ESTs): (2) definition of the karyotype of several stocks of Trypanosoma brucei using ESTs: and (3) hybridization of cDNA clones to a bacteriophage Pl library containing T. brucei genomic DNA. A central tenet of the genome project is the availability of resources to all. To this end, data are deposited in public databases and on the worldwide web site* prior to formal publication where appropriate, and clones may be requested from the genome project laboratories.
