description This paper outlines selected activities of the smallholder dairy research and development (R & D) programme of the consortium of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and its partners. Specific attention is given to activities in and for Asia. Examples are given to illustrate the programmes approach and its focus on poverty alleviation and indigenous marketing systems. ILRI's project sites for its research on crop-ruminant (dairy) livestock systems is shown on the world map. The dairy revolution: the growing demand for dairy products in developing countries (Latin America, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and China) is presented in kg per capita and annual growth (1983-2020).
