description This paper reviews papers that deals with bovine lymphocyte antigen (BoLA) system. It discusses when characterization of the bovine MHC began, workshops conducted and their concerns which included serological characterization of the products of the MHC, the bovine lymphocyte antigen (BoLA) system, using alloantisera from a number of laboratories in a microlymphocy toxicity screen on cells from dornor cattle available in Edinburgh. The paper also discusses the expression in cattle of a second or even a third BoLA class I locus, number and nature of expressed bovine class I gene products, and the complexicity of the BoLA class I system. Examines early attempts made to define bovine class II antigens involved assays of mixed lymphocyte reactivity. It also put the description given by Andersson (1986) on the use of heterologus DNA probes for RFLP analysis of the bovine class II polymorphisms at the level of the genome. The paper also discusses the attempts made in the laboratory to produce murine mAb to bovine class II determinants.
