description This report summarizes the outcomes of the regional training workshop held at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) from 24–26 June 2025. The workshop focused on strengthening capacity and fostering networks for forage disease identification and surveillance in Eastern and Southern Africa. It was conducted under the Areas of Work on Plant Health and Mycotoxin-Safe Crops of the CGIAR Sustainable Farming Science Program, and the Area of Work on Germplasm Health under the CGIAR Genebanks Accelerator. The training aimed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and collaboration of personnel from National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) and national Genebanks across the region. The 16 participants included representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia attended the workshop. The three-day workshop featured a series of presentations, hands-on laboratory sessions, group discussions, and field demonstrations. Topics covered included pest regulation procedures, monitoring strategies, and current methods for pathogen detection and surveillance. Participants also had the opportunity to reflect on the training experience. Their feedback will help shape future collaborations between NPPOs, National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in the region, and CGIAR centers. In addition, suggested topics by the participants will be considered in planning future capacity-building initiatives.
