To address these issues, the Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT and The Nature Conservancy engaged communities through participatory appraisal aimed at understanding the current context and exploring opportunities for linking feed and livestock value chains. This detailed report presents key findings from thematic analysis of three focus group discussions (FGDs) and deep-dive insights on key topics by local informants, which served as a complement to FGDs. The FGDs and key informant interviews (KII) were conducted between February 11 and 18, 2025, in Laikipia East and North Sub-counties in Laikipia County, Kenya. The FGDs engaged: (i) feed producers (producer cooperatives and self-help farmer groups), (ii) livestock fatteners (pastoralists, off-takers, value addition players, input suppliers and chairs of the community grazing management committee), and (iii) key stakeholders (County government representation from the climate change, trade and industry, cooperatives, veterinary, livestock production, and drought management departments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society institutions). The KII were mostly targeting the feed and beef producers, as well as the community grazing committees. These tools aimed to explore the constraints, opportunities, and synergies in the livestock feed and beef value chain and the enabling environment therein. |
