This study analyzes the effects of introducing improved cowpea forage and sheltering practices on milk production and revenues among agropastoral producers in the Louga and Thiès regions, using quantitative simulations within a System Dynamics model. Results indicate that improved forage enhances milk output throughout the year, including during the dry season and sheltering can help improve it further.
However, it is important to note that the improve forage grown must cover the needs for the entire dry season, else the cost of purchased feed may outweigh the benefits in increased productivity. Improved market access is also essential for translating milk productivity gains into higher revenues, particularly in areas where marketing opportunities remain limited.
Au Sénégal, la demande en produits laitiers dépasse l'offre nationale, malgré l'important cheptel bovin du pays et son potentiel significatif d'expansion de la production. Pour exploiter ce potentiel, il faut toutefois relever les défis liés à la faible productivité, aux fluctuations saisonnières et aux liens commerciaux limités.
Cette étude analyse les effets de l'introduction de pratiques améliorées en matière de fourrage à base de niébé et d'abris sur la production laitière et les revenus des producteurs agro-pastoraux des régions de Louga et de Thiès, à l'aide de simulations quantitatives dans un modèle de dynamique des systèmes. Les résultats indiquent que l'amélioration du fourrage augmente la production laitière tout au long de l'année, y compris pendant la saison sèche, et que l'abri peut contribuer à l'améliorer davantage.
Il est toutefois important de noter que le fourrage amélioré cultivé doit couvrir les besoins pendant toute la saison sèche, sinon le coût des aliments achetés pourrait l'emporter sur les avantages liés à l'augmentation de la productivité. L'amélioration de l'accès au marché est également essentielle pour traduire les gains de productivité laitière en revenus plus élevés, en particulier dans les régions où les débouchés commerciaux restent limités. |
