| description | The Climate Data Tools (CDT) Training Video Series is a capacity-building initiative developed by the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) — a World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Center (WMO-RTC) in Nairobi, Kenya — with the support of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project. The series aims to enhance the technical skills of climate professionals across Africa in managing, analyzing, and applying climate data for evidence-based decision-making.
Beginning with an introduction to IMTR’s legacy and its role in advancing meteorological education in Africa, the series then situates CDT within the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) initiative, emphasizing its importance in bridging data gaps and improving access to high-quality climate information. Subsequent modules offer step-by-step instruction on using CDT — from transforming station and gridded data to conducting advanced analyses and producing actionable climate insights. Viewers learn to manage observational datasets, visualize satellite and reanalysis data, aggregate time-series, generate climatologies and anomalies, and calculate seasonal and extreme climate indices for drought and rainfall assessments.
Together, these training modules provide a comprehensive learning pathway that empowers users (whether at national meteorological services, universities, or otherwise) to create customized, analysis-ready climate products. By strengthening national meteorological and hydrological services, the series contributes directly to building Africa’s capacity for climate resilience and supporting climate-smart development across agriculture, water, and disaster management sectors. |
