description This Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) has been developed for the installation of a Soil Archive System and a Gas Chromatograph (GC) at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria, under the Additional Financing (AF) of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project. The ESMP clarifies (i) the mitigation measures to be undertaken during the planning, installation, and operational phases to eliminate or reduce environmental and social (E&S) risks to acceptable levels, and (ii) the actions required to ensure that these measures are implemented effectively. The purpose of this ESMP is to provide a practical framework for minimizing environmental degradation and occupational health and safety risks associated with the delivery, installation, and operation of specialized research infrastructure. It includes detailed procedures for risk mitigation, emergency response, and stakeholder engagement in line with Nigerian legal requirements and the World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), specifically: ESS 1: Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts ESS 2: Labor and Working Conditions ESS 3: Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention and Management ESS 4: Community Health and Safety ESS 6: Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources This ESMP covers the scope of the project’s additional financing phase and addresses both anticipated adverse impacts and positive contributions, including capacity building, institutional strengthening, and support for regional soil health initiatives. As a living document, it will be updated and re-disclosed when new risks emerge or when activities are expanded, ensuring continuous compliance and adaptive environmental and social risk management throughout the lifecycle of the project.
