| description | Nature Positive Solutions (NPS) aim to transform agrifood systems by addressing the environmental costs of industrial agriculture. CGIAR and ICAR are advancing NPS through actionable science, partnerships, and innovations to encourage smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable practices. NPS operates on five pillars: Conserve, Manage, Restore, Recycle, and Engage, promoting food security and livelihoods.
In India, CGIAR partnered with BAIF Development Research Foundation to implement NPS in Maharashtra's Akole and Shahada clusters. These regions face challenges like fodder and water scarcity for livestock. Introducing spineless cactus (Opuntia ficus indica) offers a sustainable solution.
Spineless cactus, a versatile crop for arid climates, serves as food, fodder, fuel, fertilizer, and bio-leather. Rich in minerals, it thrives in poor soils with minimal water, offering nutritive fodder and mitigating drought impacts. BAIF has pioneered cactus cultivation, establishing over 900 demonstrations nationwide to strengthen dryland ecosystems and livelihoods. |
