| Sumario: | This study is conducted as part of Work Package 4 (WP4) within the One CGIAR Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH) project. The overarching aim of this project is to enhance fruit and vegetable production through a comprehensive, end-to-end approach across four target countries, including Benin. WP4 specifically addresses challenges related to post-harvest management and fostering inclusive market systems.
Tomatoes are known to experience some of the highest post-harvest losses in the fruit and vegetable supply chains in Sub-Saharan Africa (Sibomana et al., 2016). These losses result from a range of interrelated factors, including transportation, storage conditions, management practices, and consumer behavior (Parimi and Chakraborty, 2022). A recent literature review (Fassinou Hotegni et al., 2022) highlights a significant gap in quantitative data on post-harvest losses within the fruit and vegetable value chains, underscoring the need for targeted research to inform intervention design.
The present study, initiated by WP4, seeks to address this data gap by quantifying tomato postharvest losses along the tomato value chain. Specifically, the study aims to assess losses at critical points within the value chain and evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention package utilizing teak leaves to mitigate these losses.
