description This chapter examines the role of groups and networks in helping the poor manage their exposure to risks and cope with shocks to their livelihoods in the rural Philippines. It brings together two strands of the social capital literature: the literature that examines how social capital, variously measured, affects economic variables (for example, Narayan and Pritchett 1999; Haddad and Maluccio 2003) and studies that investigate the processes by which social capital formation, participation in networks and groups, and trusting behavior come about (for instance, Haddad and Maluccio 2003; Fafchamps and Gubert 2007).
