Such heat anomalies wreak havoc on the world’s water resources, energy needs, and ecosystems, with the most disenfranchised communities hit hardest. At the same time, poverty levels in low-income countries remain above pre-COVID-19 levels and food inflation remains unacceptably high, pushing up the number of food- and water-insecure populations, while the biodiversity that our agrifood systems depend on is at greater risk than ever. Given these immense, complex, and interlinked challenges, nexus solutions are urgently required.
In early February, the CGIAR Initiative on NEXUS Gains team met in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for a three-day “pause and reflect” meeting, reaffirming our commitment to address these challenges and planning for 2024. This is the final year of this business cycle of the initiative and the presentations and discussions focused on delivering tangible outcomes. The participants left Tashkent with a renewed sense of purpose on how NEXUS Gains can support policies, institutions, and solutions that drive the transformation of land, water, and food systems, enhancing the lives and livelihoods of the poorest and most food- and water-insecure peoples. |
