description Cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) emerges as a resilient and multipurpose crop, thriving in harsh environments with minimal inputs and poor-quality soils. This plant, with its adaptability and high water content, offers valuable products for both livestock fodder and human food, contributing to water-scarce regions. The poster addresses the challenge faced by smallholder farmers in semi-arid environments, where limited resources hinder animal feed availability. Leveraging the unique qualities of cactus pear becomes a strategic solution, particularly in North Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. The innovative approach involves investigating cactus pear as a novel fodder source, studying farmers' perceptions and attitudes, evaluating various cactus pear accessions in diverse environmental conditions, and enhancing partners' awareness and capacity. Positive outcomes include increased demand, improved agronomic practices, and significant stakeholder interest in India, Jordan, and Tunisia. Ongoing requests for cactus pear cultivation expansion demonstrate its effectiveness in addressing the green fodder gap for low-income farmers in India. The next steps focus on changing the under-utilized status of cactus pear, addressing the cochineal threat through resistant varieties, and further research to enhance its nutritional quality.
