Summary:This 265-page book gathers together 16 scientific articles presented during a meeting held in Costa Rica in July 1998 focusing on the production of environmentally sustainable and economically profitable banana and plantain. Participants from ten different countries provided information on the various aspects and concepts regarding organic/environmentally friendly banana production and the characteristics of several alternative agricultural systems are described. The agricultural and/or scientific constrains to conversion of current production systems in the short and medium term are presented. This book covers issues such as precision agriculture, alternative varieties resulting from genetic improvement programmes, conventional and organic fertilisation methods, soil management, pests and organic production as well providing information on markets for organic bananas.
