Uncovering consistencies in Indian rainfall trends observed over the last half century
Publicado 2014“…Trends in Indian rainfall records have been extensively studied but the subject remains complicated by the high spatiotemporal variability of rainfall arising from complex atmospheric dynamics. For various reasons past studies have often produced inconsistent results. …”

Managing salinity in the Indus Basin of Pakistan
Publicado 2009“…Lack of coordination among federal and provincial governments, research institutes, and national and international organizations; conventional farming and irrigation methods used by farmers; limited attention to reclamation and saline agricultural approaches; and lack of resources are some of the reasons for the low success rate. A more concerted effort that includes a greater focus on saline agriculture, capacity building of farmers, and promotion of local interventions to improve self-reliance is necessary for the management of salinity in the Indus Basin. …”

Predicting discharge and sediment for the Abay (Blue Nile) with a simple model
Publicado 2009“…The ratio of direct runoff to total flow is used to predict the sediment concentration by assuming that only the direct runoff is responsible for the sediment load in the stream. There is reasonable agreement between the model predictions and the 10-day observed discharge and sediment concentration at the gauging station on Blue Nile upstream of Rosaries Dam at the Ethiopia-Sudan border.…”

Managing salinity and waterlogging in the Indus Basin of Pakistan
Publicado 2008“…The paper suggests that to ensure the sustainability of irrigated agriculture in the Indus Basin, technical and financial support is needed and enhanced institutional arrangements including coordination among different federal and provincial government agencies to resolve inter-provincial water allocation and water related issues is required.…”

Expression and inheritance of hypersensitive resistance to rice hoja blanca virus mediated by the viral nucleocapsid protein gene in transgenic rice
Publicado 2003“…These transgenic RHBV-resistant rice lines expressed the N gene RNA at low levels that were below the detection limit by Northern blots and only resolved by RT-PCR. The nucleocapsid protein could not be detected in any of the transgenic plants either by Western or ELISA tests. …”

Cloning of the complete DNA genomes of four bean-infecting geminiviruses and determining their infectivity by electric discharge particle acceleration
Publicado 1991“…Four isolates of bipartite bean-infecting geminiviruses (bean golden mosaic geminivirus isolates from Brazil [BGMV-BZ], Guatemala [BGMV-GA], and the Dominican Republic [BGMV-DR]; and bean dwarf mosaic geminivirus from Colombia [BDMV-CO]) were cloned; full-length cloned double-stranded DNA components A and B of each isolate were not infectious when mechanically coinoculated onto bean primary leaves by surface abrasion but were infectious when coinoculated into radicles of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) by electric discharge particle acceleration. …”

Milk recording and herd registration in Ethiopia: An essential step towards genetic improvement for milk production
Publicado 2000“…Genetic improvement for productive traits in livestock, particularly in cattle, has been very slow and insignificant in the country. One of the main reasons for this is lack of well-organized and usable recorded information on the performance of both the indigenous and crossbreds with exotic genotypes to undertake structured selection and breeding programmes. …”

Relative fitness in laboratory mice of drug resistant and drug-sensitive field isolates of Trypanosoma congolense
Publicado 2000“…Generally, resistance is assumed to reduce the Darwinian fitness of pathogens in the absence of drugs. By this reasoning, a commonly accepted strategy to reverse the spread of resistance is to decrease the use of drugs. …”

Publicado 2014“…With estimated standing populations of 1.43 billion cattle, 1.87 billion sheep and goats, 0.98 billion pigs, and 19.60 billion chickens, reliable and accessible information on the distribution and abundance of livestock is needed for a many reasons. These include analyses of the social and economic aspects of the livestock sector; the environmental impacts of livestock such as the production and management of waste, greenhouse gas emissions and livestock-related land-use change; and large-scale public health and epidemiological investigations. …”
