The future of food: domestication and commercialization of indigenous food crops in Africa over the third decade (2012–2021)
Publicado 2022“…To progress this in the fourth decade, there will need to be a dedicated Centre in Africa to test and develop cultivars of indigenous crops. Finally, this review underpins a holistic approach to mitigating climate change, as well as other big global issues such as hunger, poverty and loss of wildlife habitat by reaping the benefits, or ‘profits’, from investment in the five forms of Capital, described as ‘land maxing’. …”

Multiscale interactions of climate variability and rainfall in the Sogamoso River Basin: Implications for the 1998–2000 and 2010–2012 multiyear La Niña events
Publicado 2022“…In addition, we applied wavelet analysis to investigate the links at different time scales between ENSO and the main mode of rainfall variability in the SRB. Finally, we explored the role that each scale of variability played in the prolongation and intensity of rainfall in the SRB during the 1998–2000 and 2010–2012 multiyear La Niña events. …”

Willingness to pay for quality traits and implications for sweetpotato variety breeding: case of Mozambique
Publicado 2023“…These traits were then utilized in the design of a choice experiment, implemented among 860 sweetpotato producers spread across four sweetpotato growing regions in the country. Finally, a generalized multinomial logit model was used to estimate implicit economic valuation of each of the considered trait, as well as heterogenous valuation of such traits across gender, education and age of respondent groups. …”

A robust DayCent model calibration to assess the potential impact of integrated soil fertility management on maize yields, soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions in Kenya
Publicado 2023“…This confirms that the decomposition of SOC in tropical maize cropping systems is much faster than in temperate systems and that the DayCent temperature function is not suitable to capture this with a single parameter set. Finally, the global warming potential simulated by DayCent was highest in control -N treatments (0.5–2.5 kg CO2 equivalent per kg grain yield, depending on the site) and could be reduced by 14 to 72 % by combined application of mineral N and manure at a medium rate. …”

Dietary quality and nutrition in Myanmar: Past progress, current and future challenges
Publicado 2023“…Then, in a nationally representative phone survey conducted quarterly in 2022 over a period of rapid food inflation, we find further deterioration in diet quality among adults, but no deterioration among children 6-23 months of age, suggesting parents may be trying to insulate their children from the worst effects of the crisis. Finally, we conclude the paper by discussing policy and program options in very difficult political circumstances. …”

Poverty measurement by phone: Developing and testing alternative poverty metrics from the nationally representative Myanmar Household Welfare Survey (MHWS), Round 1 (December 2021-...
Publicado 2022“…However, asset and income poverty are relatively quick and easy to measure, and conceptual complements to each other: income poverty is likely to be sensitive to shocks and seasonality, while asset poverty is insensitive to these fluctuations but captures long-term wealth. Finally, another important benefit of measuring income poverty is its ability to capture the effects of inflationary shocks, as inflation can affect both nominal incomes (e.g. through unemployment) as well as through the analyst’s price adjustments to the real food poverty line.…”

Accounting for the rapid reduction of child stunting in Tanzania over 2005-2016
Publicado 2019“…In contrast, the apparent effects of household wealth, parental education, maternal and child health care and WASH are more important in explaining stunting reduction among older children. Finally, we go beyond historical decompositions by using the regression results to project alternative stunting reduction scenarios to 2025. …”

We finalize by discussing some of the institutional and strategic considerations for the potential use of Bt potatoes in the country.…”
