Household livelihood strategies and livestock benefits dependence in Gaza province of Mozambique
Published 2011“…As expected, the analysis indicate how differential access to, or endowment of, livelihood assets determines the choice of a household's strategy in the climatic change context and the risks profiles associated with agro-pastoralist. Finally, the paper prescribes policy in relation to asset-poor households and their engagement on activities with higher economic return.…”

Appropriate technologies to replenish soil fertility in Southern Africa
Published 2007“…Legumes can be used to diversify farm system productivity but this requires P and lime application to support better legume growth and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) as well as development of markets for various legume products. …”

Livestock-environment interactions under intensifying production
Published 2001“…Within each system, the net impact of livestock production on the environment is discussed and case studies of positive livestock and environment interactions are presented. Finally, the possibilities for and implications of further intensification of livestock production are explored in some depth.…”

Relative fitness in laboratory mice of drug resistant and drug-sensitive field isolates of Trypanosoma congolense
Published 2000“…Recent in vivo and in vitro experiments on bacteria and viruses have shown that evolution in the absence of the selective drug can result in the rapid fixation of second-sire compensatory mutations that ameliorate the fitness costs associated with drug resistance. …”

The potential and uptake of remote sensing in insurance: A review
Published 2014“…The paper discusses these differences and concludes that there is particular scope for application of remote sensing by the insurance industry in index insurance because (1) indices can be constructed that correlate well with what is insured; (2) these indices can be delivered at low cost; and (3) it opens up new markets that are not served by claim-based insurance. The paper finally suggests that limited adoption of remote sensing in insurance results from a lack of mutual understanding and calls for greater cooperation between the insurance industry and the remote sensing community.…”

Calibration and bias correction of climate projections for crop modelling: An idealised case study over Europe
Published 2013“…The choice over which calibration method to use will likely depend on the situation, but change factor approaches tend to perform best in our examples. Finally, we demonstrate that the uncertainty due to the choice of calibration methodology is a significant contributor to the total uncertainty in future climate projections for impact studies. …”

Spatial and seasonal diversity of wild food plants in home gardens of Northeast Thailand
Published 2015“…Ninety-five percent of the WFP species presented additional uses, with nine different types of uses in total. Finally, as this study demonstrates, the results on both the spatial and seasonal diversity of WFPs over different spatial configurations comprise a new perspective in home garden research by providing new understandings about their composition and management.…”

GreenPhylDB: A gene family database for plant functional genomics
Published 2009“…GreenPhylDB comprises protein sequences of 12 plant species fully sequenced that were grouped into homeomorphic families using similarity-based methods. Clusters are finally processed by phylogenetic analysis to infer orthologs and paralogs that will be particularly helpful to study genome evolution. …”

Collaborative monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment: Experiences assessing the impact of improved fallows and biomass transfer in western Kenya
Published 2008“…Next the collaborative exercises on monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment are described, followed by the results of the assessments of biomass transfer and improved fallows. Finally, the impact of these exercises is discussed, highlighting the effect of the process and findings on the participating organizations.…”

No-tillage lessens soil CO2 emissions the most under arid and sandy soil conditions: results from a meta-analysis
Published 2015“…The difference increased to 29 % in sandy soils from arid climates with low soil organic carbon content (SOCC < 1 %) and low soil moisture, but tillage had no impact on CO2 fluxes in clayey soils with high background SOCC (> 3 %). Finally, nitrogen fertilization and crop residue management had little effect on the CO2 responses of soils to no-tillage. …”

The correlation of plasma lipid levels with susceptibility of inbred laboratory mice to experimental trypanosoma congolense infection.
Published 2003“…Furthermore, genetic studies have mapped the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for trypanotolerance and plasma lipid levels in mice to the same region. Finally, studies indicate that the genes that control plasma lipid levels are differentially expressed in resistant versus susceptible strains during Trypanosomiasis To investigate this hypothesis, the plasma lipid levels of C57BLl6J, A/J, and BALB/c inbred mice were manipulated by feeding them (ad libitum) on calorie matched low (5.16%) or high (23.45%) fat diets. …”

Induction of flowering in cassava through grafting
Published 2017“…However, plants from grafted cuttings tended to branch earlier, particularly after the second branching event. Published 2000“…The females lived on average 13.5 days. Finally, observations on the predation by O. albidipennis adults on three different thrips species revealed that M. sjostedti larvae were killed at a lower rate than larvae of Ceratothripoides cameroni and Frankliniella schultzei. …”

Genetic diversity of loquat germplasm (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb) Lindl) assessed by SSR markers
Published 2017“…The expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.46 and 51% on average, respectively, leading to a negative value of the Wright's fixation index (–0.20). The values of these parameters indicate a smaller degree of genetic diversity in the set of loquat accessions analyzed than in other members of the Rosaceae family. …”
