Cooperation among community leaders: The role of women’s leadership and exposure to conflict
Publicado 2024“…We also document nuanced findings that reconcile existing mixed evidence on the implication of exposure to conflict on cooperation: while conflict events that affect the whole community, such as political violence (including battles) are associated with higher cooperation, other types of conflict (e.g., demonstrations and riots) are associated with lower levels of cooperation. Finally, we identify additional predictors of cooperation among community leaders, including beliefs about other leaders’ cooperative behavior. …”

Systems analysis of fragility in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.
Publicado 2024“…Second, by performing a conflict-sensitivity analysis for Mozambique with a special focus on Cabo Delgado, we emphasize the severity of conflict impacts and exposure in this region. Finally, using a compound risk framework (CRF) tailored for Cabo Delgado, we offer a comprehensive understanding of fragility in the province, highlighting conflicts and climate hazards as intricate drivers of acute food insecurity. …”

Policies and instruments affecting water use for bioenergy production
Publicado 2011“…It is important that policies and instruments for water management on the biomass production and energy conversion side are coordinated to ensure that efficiency is achieved along the entire production chain. Finally, the evaluation of water‐use policies and instruments for bioenergy production should not only relate to their direct impacts on water use, but should also take into account overall impacts on the economy. …”

Collective action, property rights, and devolution of natural resource management: exchange of knowledge and implications for policy
Publicado 2000“…In all cases, proponents of devolution of rights to resource users struggle to understand better what elements facilitate collective action and what factors hinder its creation and sustainability. Finally, a set of recommended frameworks formulated by the workshop participants highlight the potential for fostering a devolution process that leads to the simultaneous improvement of natural resource management and the livelihoods of the poor.…”

Bridging soil health gaps for resilient food systems in the Global South
Publicado 2024“…We propose a flexible framework that can be adapted to different contexts, guiding end- users in aligning their efforts to operationalize soil health. Finally, we address critical bottlenecks that require further research to enhance the advancement and practical application of the proposed framework, these include: 1) Approaches to benchmark and interpretate soil health indicators. 2) Linking soil health indicators to productivity and environmental outcomes, along with understanding the associated trade-offs; 3) Pathways to accelerate impact in soil health decision-making necessitates the development of robust, practical, and affordable indicators that fit the needs of actors with different resources available for soil health assessment.…”

Accelerating Africa's structural transformation: lessons from East Asia.
Publicado 1999“…These interactions depend on the expansion of the marketed share of agricultural output, which enables farm cash incomes to rise. Finally, they emphasize that demography matters in that increasing the growth of non-farm employment relative to the growth of the total labor force can accelerate structural transformation.…”

Transmission of world food price changes to African markets and its effect on household welfare
Publicado 2009“…A number of countries, including Argentina, India, Russia, and Vietnam, responded by restricting rice and wheat exports in an attempt to keep domestic prices from rising. Finally, at the international level, food aid budgets were stretched, as increased need in developing countries coincided with decreased purchasing power of the World Food Programme and other food aid agencies (Benson et al. 2008).…”

Stomatal development and gene expression in rice florets
Publicado 2022“…Transcriptomic analysis of developing florets also indicates that the cellular transitions during the development of floral stomata are regulated by the same genetic network used in rice leaves. Finally, although we were unable to detect an impact on plant reproduction linked to changes in the density of floral stomata, we report alterations in global gene expression in lines overexpressing OsEPF1 and discuss how our results reflect on the possible role(s) of floral stomata.…”

Iron biofortification in rice: An update on quantitative trait loci and candidate genes
Publicado 2021“…Among the candidate genes associated with Fe uptake, translocation, and loading into rice grains, we highlight the function of transporters from the YSL and ZIP families; transporters from metal-binding molecules, such as nicotianamine and deoxymugineic acid; vacuolar iron transporters; citrate efflux transporters; and others that were shown to play a role in steps leading to Fe delivery to seeds. Finally, we discuss the application of these QTLs and genes in genomics assisted breeding for fast-tracking Fe biofortification in rice and other cereals in the near future.…”

Intrahousehold allocation, gender relations, and food security in developing countries
Publicado 2007“…This case study then identifies various stakeholders, including men, women, and especially children within families; community leaders, civil society organizations, and development practitioners at the local level; and national-level policy makers and members of the donor community who are interested in eradicating poverty, reducing malnutrition, and improving gender equity. Finally, it suggests two broad policy options to achieve gender equity: (1) eradicating discrimination and (2) promoting active catch-up of women’s status, providing examples of successful programs in Bangladesh, Guatemala, and Mexico. …”
