Efficacy of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for promoting white yam (Dioscorea rotundata) growth in West Africa
Publicado 2010“…Tuber yields of yam (Dioscorea spp.), a main staple food in West Africa, are steadily declining per unit area, an incidence for which decreasing soil fertility due to increasing land pressure is largely blamed. Recent studies demonstrated the association of a plethora of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) with yam, soil microorganisms crucial for natural soil fertility. …”

Nitrogen export from a boreal stream network following forest harvesting: seasonal nitrate removal and conservative export of organic forms
Publicado 2016“…Further, these findings shed light on the potential impact of anticipated measures to increase forest yields of boreal forests, such as increased fertilization and shorter forest rotations, which may increase the pressure on boreal surface waters in the future.…”

Competitiveness of cassava-based ethanol production in Southern Africa: a case of Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia
Publicado 2010“…Whereas the global economy has from time immemorial depended on fossil fuels, technological innovations are steadily paving ways to relieve pressure from the dwindling resources and combat the environmental consequences that come along with oil extraction and use. …”

Diversity of plants in cocoa agroforests in the humid forest zone of Southern Cameroon
Publicado 2007“…We conclude that unless there are specific efforts to promote local forest tree species in cocoa agroforests, these will progressively lose importance with increasing market access, population pressure and land use intensity.…”

Relationships between soil fertility, banana weevil and nematodes in the East African highland cooking banana in Ntungamo, southwestern Uganda
Publicado 2000“…It has been hypothesized that land use intensification within the region has led to decline in soil fertility, increased pest pressure, and decline in production. To document these relationships, a diagnostic survey was undertaken in Kikoni Parish, Ntungamo, southwestern Uganda, at a site where banana productivity is low (mean bunch weights of 14-23 kg per farm). …”

QTL Analysis of Fusarium Root Rot Resistance in an Andean X Middle American Common Bean RIL Population
Publicado 2018“…The recombinant inbred line population of CAL96 × MLB‐49‐89A was phenotyped in a greenhouse for FRR resistance with the F. brasiliense isolate and screened in the field under natural FRR disease pressure. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping was conducted on a map developed with 822 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphism markers. …”

Economic losses experienced by smallscale farmers in Malawi due to cassava brown streak virus disease
Publicado 2003“…The paper makes the following recommendations: - the cassava research organisations should mount urgent awareness campaigns of the disease and its management for both extension agents and farmers - the cassava research organisations should establish effective collaboration with the extension system on matters of proper cassava husbandry to effectively and efficiently control the disease - they should additionally carry out local collection exercises for cultivars that show CBSD disease resistance in the high disease pressure areas - there is an urgent need for cassava research and extension organisations to multiply cultivars and promising clones that have shown multiple disease resistance and that are widely accepted by farmers for distribution in the heavily affected areas - in collaboration with entrepreneurs, these organisations need to develop and strengthen sustainable seed multiplication and distribution systems as a way of assuring the provision of clean planting material.…”
