Livestock in mixed farming systems in South Asia
Publicado 2008“…Unlike in the past, productivity increases should contribute a larger share to output growth owing to increasing pressure on land and competing resources. Low productivity of livestock in mixed crop-livestock systems in South Asia is due to non-adoption of available technologies or their uptake has not been sustainable, because they were improperly targeted into the farming systems (for example, introducing cross-breeding technology in areas with poor feed resources, improved forage crops in low rainfall areas etc). …”

Land Use and Water Quality Along a Mekong Tributary in Northern Lao P.D.R.
Publicado 2011“…Overall, it reflected the balance between the stream self-cleaning potential and human pressure on the riparian zone: (i) high bacteria and suspended load levels occurred where livestock are left to free-range within the riparian zone; (ii) very low oxygen content and high bacteriological contamination prevailed downstream from villages; (iii) high concentrations of bacteria were consistently observed along urbanized banks; (iv) low oxygen content were associated with the discharge of organic-rich wastewater from a small industrial plant; (v) very high suspended load and bacteria levels occurred during flood events due to soil erosion from steep cultivated hill slopes. …”

Hydraulic redistribution by two semi-arid shrub species: implications for Sahelian agro-ecosystems
Publicado 2012“…Monthly predawn leaf water potential was measured using a portable pressure chamber. Soil water potential (Js) at the 20 cm depth declined significantly during the dry season with diel changes in Js of 0.6 to 1.1 MPa. …”

A quantitative model for understanding and exploring land use decisions by smallholder agrowetland households in rural areas of East Africa
Publicado 2014“…The scenario of increasing land scarcity on upland was simulated to explore how defined processes will respond to the rising pressure exerted on the wetland. Land conversion increased by 10 percent, fallow practices decreased by one-third to half. …”

Draught work efficiency of F1 crossbred dairy cows and the Ethiopian highland Zebu oxen under smallholder farming context
Publicado 2000“…The highlands comprise only 40% of the country's total land area but carry 79% of livestock heads and 80% of the human population results in higher pressure on the arable land and feed resources. The use of crossbred dairy cows for both milk production and draught is one possible alternative option to intense the farming systems in the region and make more efficient use of the limited farm resources. …”

Publicado 2017“…Given the relatively large water footprint (WF) of animal products, this trend is likely to increase the pressure on already scarce water resources. Aim We estimate, analyse and interpret the changes in consumption of meat and milk between the 1980s and 2000s for three income classes in Nairobi, the ratio of domestic production to imports, and the WF (the volume of freshwater consumed) to produce these commodities in Kenya and abroad. …”

Conclusion: It can be concluded that the existing farmers’ knowledge on naming, classification and diversity should be complemented with maintenance of the creative dynamics of traditional knowledge and transmission of the knowledge are crucial for constructing sustainable management.…”
