Eco-floristic sectors and deforestation threats in Sumatra: identifying new conservation area network priorities for ecosystem-based land use planning
Published 2010“…Eighty-five percent of all forest loss (10.2 million ha) occurred in the eastern peneplain, western lowland regions and swamps. In 2007, only 29% of forests were protected by conservation areas, only nine of the 38 EFS had more than 50% of their remaining forest cover protected. 38% of remaining forest was ‘‘critically endangered’’, ‘‘endangered’’ or ‘‘vulnerable’’ EFSs (5 million ha) but only 1 million ha (20%) were protected. …”

Eucalyptus d'Australie: habitats naturels et dynamique d'evolution

Sumatra’s rubber agroforests: advent, rise and fall of a sustainable cropping system
Published 2009“…Thanks to the continuously increasing demand for rubber by the developing industry, rubber agroforests spread over Sumatra’s eastern peneplains until the 1990s. Forest conversion to rubber agroforests conserves a high level of forest biodiversity and the agroforests act as a buffer zone around national parks. …”

Agricultural intensification, deforestation, and the environment: assessing tradeoffs in Sumatra, Indonesia
Published 2001“…Estimates of returns to land and labor presented in this chapter indicate that from a purely private perspective, returns to forest conversion are high in Sumatra's peneplains. Because all derived land uses are inferior to natural forest, based on global environmental concerns, ASB research in Indonesia has shown that land use changes involve tradeoffs between these environmental concerns and the objectives of poverty alleviation and national development. …”
