Towards a Replicable Innovative Tool for Adaptive Climate Monitoring and Weather Forecasting Using Traditional Indigenous and Local Indicators to Strengthen AgroWeather Resilience... por Osumba, Joab, Radeny, Maren A.O., Recha, John W.M., Oroma, George W., Nzoka, Oscar, Mbingo, Joyce, Warinda, Enock, Mwale, Simon

    Publicado 2023
“…Results comprise identified ethnographic weather prediction indicators per locality, and their implications for local weather forecasting, which for the first time is presented in probabilistic terms in a way local communities can associate with, and which can compare and contrast empirically with conventional weather forecast language. The tool also provides actionable agro-climate/ agro-weather advisories with appropriate lead times for local response and a basis for strategic seasonal planning and operational risk management decision-making. …”

  10. A phantom ultrasonic insect chorus repels low‐flying bats, but most are undeterred por Sedlock, Jodi L., Gomes, Dylan G. E., Rubin, Juliette J., Woody, Sarah, Hadi, Buyung A. R., Barber, Jesse R.

    Publicado 2021
“…We alternated between chorus‐on and chorus‐off hourly, and acoustically monitored bat activity and arthropod prey abundance. We found that our phantom katydid chorus reduced bat activity nearest the sound source by 39.3% (95% CI: 7.8%–60.0%) for species whose call spectrum fully overlapped with the chorus, and elicited marginal reductions in activity in species with only partial spectral overlap. Our study suggests that ultrasonic insect choruses degrade foraging habitat, potentially suppressing bats’ ecosystem services as consumers of pests; and, given the global distribution of meadow katydids, may provide an underappreciated force modifying animal behaviour in other grassland habitats.A free Plain Language Summary can be found within the Supporting Information of this article.…”

“…Developing site-specific fertilizer recommendations advisory will enhance nutrient use efficiency, increase and sustain yield, and benefit farmers while improving soil and environmental quality. Plain Language Summary This paper reports research targeting different nutrient sources on maize yield and soil properties under different landscape positions. Our understanding of the management of plant nutrients under different landscape positions in tropical farming systems is still limited, where soil fertility depletion and nutrient mining are key constraints to increased and sustainable crop yield because of low soil organic matter content, low nutrient and water retention capacity, and nutrient losses. …”
