From shifting cultivation to teak plantation: effect on overland flow and sediment yield in a montane tropical catchment
Publicado 2016“…The 25-to-50% lower 137Cs activities measured in soils collected under mature teak plantations compared to soils under other land uses illustrate the severity of soil erosion processes occurring in teak plantations.…”

Trade-Offs in Multi-Purpose Land Use under Land Degradation
Publicado 2017“…Land degradation reduces our options to meet both food demands and environmental needs. In order to illustrate this trade-off dilemma, four representative services, carbon sinks, water storage, biodiversity, and space for urbanization, are discussed here based on a review of contemporary literature that cuts across the domain of ecosystem services that are provided by land. …”

Capturing farm diversity with hypothesis-based typologies: An innovative methodological framework for farming system typology development
Publicado 2018“…We demonstrate that the methodological decisions on data collection, variable selection, data-reduction and clustering techniques can bear a large impact on the typology results. We illustrate the effects of analysing the diversity from different angles, using different typology objectives and different hypotheses, on typology creation by using an example from Zambia’s Eastern Province. …”

The water-energy-food nexus: climate risks and opportunities in southern Africa
Publicado 2018“…We highlighted the importance of the WEF nexus to sustainably address the sectoral coordination of resources through harmonised institutions and policies, as well as setting targets and indicators to direct and monitor nexus developments. We illustrate the significance of the nexus in promoting inclusive development and transforming vulnerable communities into resilient societies. …”

Bridging funding gaps for climate and sustainable development: Pitfalls, progress and potential of private finance
Publicado 2018“…Despite the increasing appeal of green finance as a concept, the delivery of an empirical evidence base that illustrates the effectiveness of projects aligned with climate action and sustainable development—both in terms of measurable performance and value for money—has been less forthcoming. …”

Natural regeneration as a tool for large-scale forest restoration in the tropics: prospects and challenges
Publicado 2016“…Here, we focus on the conditions that favor natural regeneration within tropical forest landscapes. We illustrate cases where large‐scale natural regeneration followed forest clearing and non‐forest land use, and describe the social and ecological factors that drove these local forest transitions. …”

Securing well-being with the advent of climate hazards: Case of forest-dependent communities in a landscape in the Congo Basin
Publicado 2016“…– This paper aims to examine the contribution of forests resource systems to the different aspects of community well-being, the implications of climate variability on the different sources of well-being and further identifies direct and indirect social and policy opportunities relevant for communities to enhance their capabilities in the face of climate variability and change in the Tri-National de la Sangha landscape of Cameroon.– It illustrates on data collected from focus group discussions and from 151 households randomly selected in three villages to operationalize the conceptual links between community well-being and vulnerability.– The study shows that vulnerability to climate change interferes with community strategies to achieve well-being, in addition to non-climatic processes which are both internal and external to communities. …”

Conversion of traditional cropland into teak plantations strongly increased soil erosion in montane catchments of Southeastern Asia [Abstract only]
Publicado 2017“…Furthermore, sediment yields strongly increased from 98 to 609 Mg km-2. These changes illustrate the severity of soil erosion processes occurring under teak plantations characterized by the virtual absence of understorey vegetation to dissipate raindrop energy, which facilitates the formation of an impermeable surface crust. …”
