Relevance and limitations of biogenic and physicogenic classification: a comparison of approaches for differentiating the origin of soil aggregates
Publicado 2009“…The NIRS characteristics of BIO were also more uniform than those of PHYS, suggesting that BIO aggregates have a simpler organization and as a consequence more homogeneous ecological functions. Thus, our findings suggest that information may be lost when only the physical aspect of aggregates is used to quantify the activity of ecosystem engineers in soil. …”

Water saving and economic impacts of land leveling: the case study of cotton production in Tajikistan
Publicado 2007“…The results showed that laser land leveling can reduce the water application rate in 2004 by 593 M3/ha, in 2005 by 1509 M3/ha and in 2006 by 333 M3/ha in comparison with the unleveled field, located in the similar agro-ecological conditions. The deep percolation was 8% lower and run off 24% less than in non-leveled field. …”

Costs of aflatoxin in the Kenyan dairy value chain
Publicado 2014“…Economic costs of aflatoxin contamination could be split into two categories: direct market costs and human health costs. Using agro-ecological zones, five counties in Kenya — Kwale, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Kisii, and Bungoma — were selected randomly for this study. …”

Soil organic carbon and nutrient contents are not influenced by exclosures established in communal grazing land in Nile Basin, northern Ethiopia
Publicado 2014“…Land degradation through extensification of agriculture and overgrazing is an increasing problem across large expanses of the Ethiopian highlands that give rise to a loss in a range of ecosystem services. Ecological restoration through exclosure establishment has become increasingly important approach to reversing degraded ecosystems in Ethiopia and particularly in the Amhara regional state, northern Ethiopia. …”

Towards a more holistic research approach to plant conservation: the case of rare plants on oceanic islands
Publicado 2015“…However, holistic studies, addressing several key issues, might be more useful, supporting management programs, while unravelling basic knowledge about ecological and population level processes. A more comprehensive approach to research is proposed, encompassing: phylogenetics/systematics, pollination biology and seed dispersal, propagation, population genetics, species distribution models (SDMs), threats and monitoring. …”

Predictive factors and risk mapping for Rift Valley fever epidemics in Kenya
Publicado 2016“…Using surveillance records collected between 1951 and 2007, we determined the risk of exposure and outcome of an RVF outbreak, examined the ecological and climatic factors associated with the outbreaks, and used these data to develop an RVF risk map for Kenya. …”

Heterosis and combining ability of elite maize inbred lines under northern corn leaf blight disease prone environments of the mid-altitude tropics
Publicado 2016“…The hybrids, parents and three standard check varieties were evaluated using an alpha lattice design with two replications across seven environments in the mid-altitude sub-humid agro-ecologies in Ethiopia. The new top ranking hybrids displayed up to 250 % high-parent heterosis and mid-parent heterosis for grain yield and up to −25 % high-parent mid-parent heterosis for NCLB reaction. …”

Application of in-vitro micropropagation technique for sustainable production of four local taro cultivars [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott] in Cameroon
Publicado 2017“…Taro leaf blight disease has recently been reported in Cameroon to cause between 50 and 100% yields loss of taro in most of the agro-ecological crop growing regions. This has led to a significant reduction in disease-free planting materials, edible crop and increased. …”

Evaluation of farmers crop production practices that determine Striga gesnerioides infestation of cowpea fields in Nigerian savannas
Publicado 2010“…Increase in period of land use and relay intercropping contributed less to reducing infestation, while Phosphorus fertilizer application, use of resistant variety and rotation contributed more to decrease in infestation and increase in yield in both ecological zones. Therefore, the major factors that promote striga infestation are: prolonged land use, growing varieties that are not resistant to striga, continuous cropping of cowpea, inadequate phosphorus fertilization and late planting of cowpea. …”
