Food security and climate change: on the potential to adapt global crop production by active selection to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide
Publicado 2012“…In spite of the recognition that atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential plant resource that has increased globally by approximately 25 per cent since 1959, efforts to increase the biological conversion of atmospheric CO2 to stimulate seed yield through crop selection is not generally recognized as an effective adaptation measure. …”

Why could the coffee crop endure climate change and global warming to a greater extent than previously estimated?
Publicado 2019“…Here, we summarize recent insights on the coffee plant’s physiological performance at elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration [CO2]. We specifically (i) provide new data of crop yields obtained under free-air CO2 enrichment conditions, (ii) discuss predictions on the future of the coffee crop as based on rising temperature and (iii) emphasize the role of [CO2] as a key player for mitigating harmful effects of supra-optimal temperatures on coffee physiology and bean quality. …”

Potential for soil organic carbon sequestration in grasslands in East African countries: A review
Publicado 2020“…Increasing SOC stocks (so‐called SOC sequestration) improves soil fertility and contributes to climate change mitigation by binding atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Grasslands constitute about 70% of all agricultural land, but their potential for SOC sequestration is largely unknown. …”

Agriculture and climate change: Monitoring, reporting, and verification methodologies for agriculture, forestry, and other land use
Publicado 2009“…Facilitating carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems could provide a significant amount of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) abatement, which is necessary to limit global temperature increases to only 2 degrees Celsius in the next century until more permanent mitigation strategies are instituted. …”

Impacts of climate change on the agricultural and aquatic systems and natural resources within the CGIAR’s mandate
Publicado 2012“…There are many uncertainties as to how changes in temperature, rainfall and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations will interact in relation to agricultural productivity; the resultant changes in the incidence, intensity and spatial distribution of important weeds, pests and diseases are largely unknown; and the impacts of climate change and increases in climate variability on agricultural systems and natural-resource-dependent households, as well as on food security and the future vulnerability of already hungry people in the tropics and subtropics, are still largely a closed book. …”

Microbial communities in a boreal forest podzol profile and responses to the presence of Pinus sylvestris seedling roots
Publicado 2013“…The boreal biome consists of coniferous forests that cover much of the northern hemisphere, and constitute an important natural resource for the forest industry, but has also gained attention in the light of global warming in acting as potential sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Both forest production and carbon sequestration are closely connected to the activities of soil microorganisms, which play major roles in nutrient cycling and decomposition of plant biomass. …”

The effects of postharvest carbon dioxide and a cold storage treatment on Tuta absoluta mortality and tomato fruit quality
Publicado 2021“…Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the ability of T. absoluta to complete its preimaginal development on tomato fruit during the postharvest period and to evaluate the effectiveness of different supra atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and cold storage treatments on T. absoluta control. …”

Should tree invasions be used in treeless ecosystems to mitigate climate change?
Publicado 2023“…In some areas of the world, incentives exist to retain invasive non-native trees in natural systems as a mechanism for increasing ecosystem C storage and reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Although this novel opportunity for C sequestration holds appeal, such an approach is problematic for several reasons: (1) invasive trees do not always increase net C sequestration due to greater occurrence of fire or reduced soil C; (2) lower albedo in invaded areas can increase absorption of solar radiation, thereby offsetting potential C sequestration; and (3) tree invasions often also have negative effects on biodiversity, economic opportunities, and water yield. …”
