Framing Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus interactions in the Tana-Beles Sub-Basin of Ethiopia
Publicado 2024“…This dominance is driven by extensive food production activities, which lead to substantial water abstraction and hydrological alterations to meet the intensive water demands of crop cultivation. …”

Assessing the contribution of managed aquifer recharge programs on groundwater storage in the Ramganga Basin
Publicado 2025“…Groundwater, which supports nearly two-thirds of irrigation and underpins food security in India, faces depletion due to unsustainable abstraction. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) programs, which replenish aquifers during periods of surplus surface water, have emerged as a national strategy to bolster groundwater security. …”

The North West dolomite aquifers, South Africa: a stalled opportunity for water security and development
Publicado 2018“…They serve as key water sources for municipal water supply and irrigation, and are also ecologically important in supplying springs that feed important rivers. Over-abstraction and consequent falling groundwater levels jeopardize water supply security, with increasing costs and risks to sustainable development. …”

The Lower Krishna Basin: basin closure and shifting waterscape in South India
Publicado 2007“…This progressively led to the closure of the basin: surface water resources are now almost entirely committed to human consumptive uses; the increasing groundwater abstraction negatively affects the surface water balance by decreasing base flows, and the discharge to the ocean continues to decrease. …”

Bridging research, policy, and practice in African agriculture: progress and problems in confronting hunger and poverty
Publicado 2004“…At bottom, the issue is how to promote 'evidence-readiness' among inherently conservative and pragmatic policy makers and practitioners and 'user-readiness' among inherently abstraction-oriented researchers.…”

Development of an eco-hydrological distance index and improved environmental flow assessment by integrating ecological monitoring and hydrological modeling
Publicado 2025“…The methodology involves: (i) a water balance simulation using a distributed hydrological model that accounts for human impacts, (ii) regression models to establish good and bad e-flow thresholds based on monitored data, and (iii) the EHDI, which compares actual flow with these thresholds to identify rivers where further water abstraction should be restricted. The application across 11,000 river reaches in Tuscany, (Italy) reveals that many rivers approach the bad e-flow threshold in summer. …”

Insights into the potential of water conservation in irrigated agriculture: a case study from the arid Mediterranean highlands
Publicado 2025“…Jordan’s Amman-Zarqa (AZ) basin faces increasing water scarcity due to increasing demands and persistent groundwater over-abstractions for irrigation. To address this issue, water conservation has been set as a national strategy, and several initiatives aiming to conserve water in irrigated agriculture have been implemented in the basin’s highlands. …”

Investing in agricultural water management to benefit smallholder farmers in Burkina Faso.
Publicado 2012“…Motor pumps used upstream of reservoirs can support profitable dry-season vegetable cultivation, but care must be taken regarding over-abstraction, pollution and conflicts. Greater adoption of motor pumps could benefit some 332,000 farming households irrigating up to 4% of the total agricultural land area at a total investment cost of USD 121 million; and (4) Combination of a range of agricultural water management options ? …”

Biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes - are we asking the right questions?
Publicado 2004“…The assumed relationship between biodiversity or local richness and the persistence of ‘ecosystem services’ (that can sustain productivity on-site as well as off-site, e.g. through regulation of water flow and storage) in agricultural landscapes has generated considerable interest and a range of experimental approaches. The abstraction level aimed for, however, may be too high to yield meaningful results. …”

Developing tools to link environmental flows science and its practice in Sri Lanka
Publicado 2014“…Hence estimation of EF has been made mandatory in environmental impact assessments (EIAs) of all large development projects involving river regulation/water abstraction. Considering EF is especially vital under the rapid urbanization and infrastructure development phase that dawned after the end of the war in the North and the East of the country in 2009. …”

Publicado 2015“…Analysis was done at daily, weekly and biweekly base using nine years of hydrological data (1988-97) by classifying the rainfall seasons in to six based on the seasonal cumulative of effective rainfall (Pe). The initial abstraction (Ia) was taken to be equal to the evapotranspiration loss (E) computed by Thornthwaite-Mather water balance method in replacement of the 20% of the potential storage (S). …”
