Impact of infestation by parasitic weeds on rice farmers' productivity and technical efficiency in sub-Saharan Africa
Published 2017“…Household and field survey data were collected from rice farmers in Cote d’Ivoire and Benin in West Africa. A stochastic frontier production function was estimated, which allows for identifying the levels of exogenous factors that prevent farmers from improving technical efficiency levels. …”

Determinants of adoption and intensity of use of balance nutrient management systems technologies in the northern Guinea savanna of Nigeria
Published 2010“…As part of a major effort to address soil fertility decline in West Africa, an integrated soil fertility management project promoted two technology packages: a combined application of inorganic fertilizer and manure (BNMS-manure) and a soybean/maize rotation practice (BNMS-rotation) in the northern Guinea savanna (NGS) of Nigeria. …”

An insight in the reproductive biology of Therophilus javanus (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, and Agathidinae), a potential biological control agent against the legume pod borer (Lepidop...
Published 2017“…Therophilus javanus is a koinobiont, solitary larval endoparasitoid currently being considered as a biological control agent against the pod borer Maruca vitrata, a devastating cowpea pest causing 20–80% crop losses in West Africa. We investigated ovary morphology and anatomy, oogenesis, potential fecundity, and egg load in T. javanus, as well as the effect of factors such as age of the female and parasitoid/host size at oviposition on egg load. The number of ovarioles was found to be variable and significantly influenced by the age/size of the M. vitrata caterpillar when parasitized. …”

An evaluation of farmer field school induced changes in Ghanaian cocoa production
Published 2010“…A case study of Ghanaian cocoa farmer field schools was conducted to provide feedback on a regional effort to close the yield gap across the cocoa belt of West Africa. Production practices were significantly modified in the year following training with notable increases registered in both the number of producers planting hand pollinated hybrid cocoa seedlings and in the area planted to hybrids. …”

Growth characteristics of ten Mucuna accessions and their effect on speargrass Imperata cylindrica (L.) dry matter
Published 2001“…Rauesch. is one of the most common and difficult weeds to control in many crops grown in West Africa. Studies were conducted from 1997 to 1999 in the forest/savannah transition zone to identify growth characteristics that enhance the competitive ability of Mucuna accessions against I. cylindrica. …”

Exploitation of a woody host plant and cerambycidassociated volatiles as hostfinding cues by the larger grain borer (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae)
Published 1998“…Elliot) Keay attacked by the girdling cerambycid Analeptes trifasciata F. in the Lama forest of central Benin, West Africa. Emergence data from A. trifasciata wood samples revealed a diverse insect fauna, which consisted of 27 primarily coleopteran species of 8 different families. …”

Thermal ecology of Zonocerus variegatus and its effect on biocontrol using pathogens
Published 2000“…1 Thermal behaviour of the variegated grasshopper, Zonocerus variegatus, was investigated in the humid tropical zone of southern Benin, west Africa, in the dry seasons of 1996 and 1998. In 1998, investigations included studies of a population of grasshoppers sprayed with an oil‐based formulation of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var acridum. 2 Body temperature measurements and observations of thermal behaviour both in the field and on thermal gradients in the laboratory, suggest that Z. variegatus was not an active behavioural thermoregulator. …”

The economics of cocoa-fruit agroforests in Southern Cameroon
Published 2021“…However, soil fertility and weed pressure are technical problems that must be overcome if cocoa agroforests are to be established in the Chromolaena odorata thickets that characterize the short fallow land uses in West Africa. Fertilizer supplementation and increased labor will be required for weed control, particularly during the establishment phase, yet fertilizer use is not currently practiced in cocoa agroforests in southern Cameroon, as cost and availability limit its use.…”
