Enhanced discrimination of African swine fever virus isolates through nucleotide sequencing of the p54, p72, and pB602L (CVR) genes
Publicado 2009“…The data revealed that these isolates were identical in their p72 and p54 sequence to viruses responsible for ASF outbreaks in Uganda in 2003. There was a minor difference in the number of tetrameric repeats within the B602L sequence of the Kenyan isolates that caused the second Kenyan outbreak in 2007. …”

Evaluation of participatory disease surveillance for highly pathogenic avian influenza in Africa and rinderpest in Pakistan
Publicado 2012“…Data were collected from 120 individuals by workshops, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews in Benin, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda. PDS results were consistent with other data for absence of disease but the absence of detected cases and a dearth of epidemiological and surveillance data prevented quantification of some indicators. …”

Screening forage and browse legumes germplasm to nutrient stresses: III. Tolerance of Sesbania to aluminium and low phosphorus in soils and nutrient solution
Publicado 1993“…The Sesbania varied in their tolerance to Al which gave shoot yield reductions of 18 to 69 percent with 3 PPm and 33 to 84 percent with 6 PPm Al at low Increasing P level to 6200 PPm greatly alleviated the deleterious effects of Al to such an extent that only one accession had growth reduction greater than 50 percent at 3 PPm Al. The accessions from Uganda showed similar high performance in soils and nutrient solutions, but there was more divergence in the performance of the accessions from each of the other countries, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.…”

Transitions in agro-pastoralist systems of East Africa: Impacts on food security and poverty
Publicado 2013“…We carried out fieldwork in 12 sites in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to understand changes in farming systems in the recent past, and to test the hypothesis that sedentary farmers in zones that may become warmer and drier in the future may be forced to increase their reliance on livestock vis-à-vis cropping in the future. …”

Improving agricultural water productivity through integrated termite management
Publicado 2013“…CPWF research demonstrated that rapid restoration of pasture production is possible by providing manure through night corralling of cattle prior to re-seeding termite affected rangeland in Uganda. In degraded Ethiopian and Ugandan croplands, preliminary results also suggest that application of maize or sorghum stover to growing maize crops reduces termite damage and associate yield losses. …”

Description of potential development domains for Humidtropics—A CGIAR Research Program
Publicado 2014“…Empirical studies in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda (e.g. Pender et al. 1999; Pender et al. 2004; Ehui and Pender 2005) suggest that interaction of the three socio-economic and biophysical layers—population density, agricultural potential and market access—provide good explanatory power in predicting the type of agricultural enterprises and development pathways encountered in different rural communities, as the layers are strongly related to the feasibility and attractiveness of specific development and livelihood strategies (Wood et al. 1999). …”

Closing system-wide yield gaps to increase food production and mitigate GHGs among mixed crop–livestock smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa
Publicado 2016“…In this study we estimate yield gaps for mixed crop–livestock smallholder farmers in seven Sub-Saharan African sites covering six countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Senegal and Burkina Faso). We also assess their potential to increase food production and reduce the GHG emission intensity of their products, as a result of closing these yield gaps.We use stochastic frontier analysis to construct separate production frontiers for each site, based on 2012 survey data prepared by the International Livestock Research Institute for the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security program. …”
