Capacity versus incentive factors explaining research productivity: Comparative and multilevel analysis of Nigeria and Ghana agricultural research systems
Publicado 2016“…This paper analyzes factors that explain variations in research productivity and outreach among 344 agricultural scientists in Nigeria and 237 agricultural scientists in Ghana using multilevel analysis.Education level, years of experience, and perceived adequacy of funding, physical and human resources are significant capacity actors explaining research productivity.In addition to capacity factors, incentives also showed to be significant in explaining research productivity.Reported staff satisfaction on organizational climate, presence of strong M&E system and presence of flexible-type organizational culture are consistently significant incentive factors explaining productivity.Results revealed that quantity and quality of human resources seem to be the priority for Ghana; while adequacy of physical and financial resources and implementation of organizational management systems seem to be the priority for Nigeria.…”

Humanitarian assistance and resilience-building: Impact of Fadama III-AF II on food security and livelihood restoration in Northeastern Nigeria
Publicado 2019“…The ongoing insurgency in northeastern Nigeria has led to the loss of over 20,000 lives and about 4,500 abductions since 2002 and, in 2015 alone, caused an economic loss of about US$450 million, equivalent to 5.7 percent of northeastern Nigeria’s gross domestic product.1 As of October 2018, there were 2.03 million internally displaced people (IDPs) and 1.64 million returnees a total of 3.7 million people in need of humanitarian support, or 14 percent of northeastern Nigeria’s population.2 Communities affected by conflict experience severe food and nutrition deprivation and difficult mental health conditions.3 Beyond political and military efforts aimed at ending conflicts, approaches to helping conflict-affected communities have evolved over time from a focus on humanitarian support to more dynamic and sustainable strategies. …”

Using two rounds of the Nigeria LSMS survey, we apply multinomial logit inverse probability weighting (MIPW) methods to construct matching samples across three different types of hydrological basins – dam basins, which are basins that contain large irrigation dams and the area upstream of such dams; downstream basins, which are located downstream of large irrigation dams; and non-dam basins, which are not associated with large irrigation dams. …”
