Use of Tomato (Lycopersicon-Esculentum) Seedlings to Detect Bensulfuron and Quinclorac Residues in Water
Publicado 2017“…During 1990, injury to tomatoes grown on the narrow land between the Albufera Lake (Spain) and the Mediterranean Sea was attributed to use of irrigation water coming from adjacent rice fields containing bensulfuron and quinclorac. …”

Economic sustainability of Spanish table grapes in different water and technology contexts
Publicado 2017“…Eighty-five percent of Spanish table grapes are produced near the Mediterranean Sea, in very and regions. The irrigation-water availability influences the cropping plans adopted on farms and, on the medium-term, it will also influence viability and competitiveness. …”

Resilience assessment in complex natural systems
Publicado 2024“…We validate our approach using simulated data and demonstrate its application using empirical time series of an Atlantic cod population and marine ecosystems in the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. We show that Cusp Resilience Assessment is a powerful method to empirically estimate resilience in support of a sustainable management of our constantly adapting ecosystems under global climate change.…”

Genetic diversity and structure in Egyptian indigenous sheep populations mirror patterns of anthropological interactions
Publicado 2015“…Further analysis revealed that this genetic structure was the result of the exchange of genetic stocks along the Nile River valley and the Mediterranean Sea coast, but, minimal gene flow between flocks found in the Northern, Central and Southern Egypt across the Western desert. …”

Global warming induced hybrid rainy seasons in the Sahel
Publicado 2016“…Further composite investigations of seasonal droughts, oceans warming and the regional atmospheric circulation nexus reveal that the low-to-mid-level atmospheric winds pattern, often stationary relative to either strong or neutral El-Niño-Southern-Oscillations drought patterns, associates to basin warmings in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea to trigger hybrid rainy seasons in the Sahel. …”

Anthropogenic events and responses to environmental stress are shaping the genomes of Ethiopian indigenous goats
Publicado 2024“…At K = 5, the West African Dwarf and Moroccan goats were separated from East African goats demonstrating a likely historical legacy of goat arrival and dispersal into Africa via the coastal Mediterranean Sea and the Horn of Africa. FST, XP-EHH, and Hp analysis revealed signatures of selection in Ethiopian goats overlaying genes for thermo-sensitivity, oxidative stress response, high-altitude hypoxic adaptation, reproductive fitness, pathogen defence, immunity, pigmentation, DNA repair, modulation of renal function and integrated fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. …”

Advancing water security in Africa with new high-resolution discharge data
Publicado 2024“…The total average annual discharge for Africa is quantified at 3271.4 km³·year−1, with contributions to oceanic basins: 1000.0 km³·year−1 to the North Atlantic, primarily from the Senegal, Gambia, Volta, and Niger Rivers; 1327.2 km³·year−1 to the South Atlantic, largely from the Congo River; 214.7 km³·year−1 to the Mediterranean Sea, predominantly from the Nile River; and 729.4 km³·year−1 to the Indian Ocean, with inputs from rivers such as the Zambezi. …”

Genotyping-by-sequencing provides the discriminating power to investigate the subspecies of Daucus carota (Apiaceae)
Publicado 2020“…Conclusions: Our study suggests that (1) the morphotypes identified as D. carota subspecies gummifer (as currently broadly circumscribed), all confined to areas near the Atlantic Ocean and the western Mediterranean Sea, have separate origins from sympatric members of other subspecies of D. carota, (2) D. carota subsp. maximus, on two clades with some accessions of subsp. carota, can be distinguished from each other but only with poor morphological support, (3) D. carota subsp. capillifolius, well distinguished morphologically, is an apospecies relative to North African populations of D. carota subsp. carota, (4) the eastern cultivated carrots have origins closer to wild carrots from central Asia than to western cultivated carrots, and (5) large SNP data sets are suitable for species-level phylogenetic studies in Daucus…”

Towards a common vision for climate change, security and migration in the Mediterranean
Publicado 2024“…While the food-land-water nexus represents a potential intersection where to mitigate these tensions, conflict, poverty, and a lack of opportunities for youth—exacerbated by environmental and climate change—compel migration within and across regions, which often occurs through unsafe channels, including the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, the challenge is intensified by the lack of cohesive long-term governance and a common vision among agricultural resource management authorities and policy actors, leading to disparate efforts in addressing these issues (ARLEM, 2021). …”
