indicus crosses under the dual purpose system, which is important for the total appraisement of the system. The purpose of the work was to compare the growth rate
of two pure breeds, five F1, one F2, and two three way crosses in a mountainous
zone (800 to 1200 meters) of north central Colombia. The animals were grazing with
wather and mineral mixture at libjiwn. The calves remained with their dams for 8 hours
after partial milking of them. Weaning was at nine months of age. Data was analysed by least squares methods and the means were compared by Tukey test. The
breed effect was highly significant (P 0.01) for the five independent variable analysed. The Bos taurus-Bos in(/icu.r F1 (Red Holstein x Zebu, Brown Swiss x Zebu, Normande x Zebu and Blanco Orelinegro x Zebu) had a weaning and 18 months weights
of 151.0 and 249.9 kg and surpassed the Zebu by 5.3 and 9.1%, respectively. The
Brown Swiss x Zebu excelled the Brown Swiss x Blanco orejinegro by 16.0 and 34.5%
for weaning and 1 8months weights, respectively. The corresponding advantages of
F Red Holstein x Zebu over the F2 Black Holstein x Zebu were of 15.9 and 13.2%.
The crosses Brown Swiss (Zebu x Blanco Orejinegro) and Zebu (Black Holstein x
Blanco Orejinegro), althoug having crossbred dams, their weaning weight were 3.3%
below Zebu weight, nevertheless for 18 months weight it showed a small recovery
(2% over Zebu). The study results make emphasis on the importance of hybrid vigor
especially in the first cross. |

Son relativamente pocos los estudios que reportan las tasas de crecimiento hasta los 18 meses, de animales cruzados Bos taurus-Bos indicus bajo el sistema de doble propósito, lo cual es importante para la evaluación total de dicho sistema. Los objetivos del trabajo fueron los de comparar las tazas de crecimiento de 2 razas puras, cinco F1, un F2 y dos tri-híbridos en una zona montañosa baja (800 a 1200 m) del norte y centro de Colombia. Los animales estuvieron en pastoreo con agua y sal mineralizada a voluntad. Los terneros permanecieron con sus madres después del ordeño hasta las horas de la tarde. El destete se realizó aproximadamente a los 9 meses. Los datos se analizaron por el método de cuadrados mínimos y los promedios se compararon por la prueba de Tukey. El efecto de grupo racial fue altamente significativo (P menor que 0.01) en las 5 variedades dependientes analizadas. Los F1 Bos taurus-Bos indicus (Holstein Rojo x Cebú, Pardo Suizo x Cebú, Normando x Cebú y Blanco Orejinegro x Cebú) promediaron al destete y 18 meses 151.0 y 249.9 kg de peso corporal, superando al Cebú en 5.3 y 9.1 por ciento respectivamente. El Pardo Suizo x Cebú superó al Pardo Suizo x Blanco Oreginegro en 16.0 y 34.5 por ciento en peso al destete y 18 meses respectivamente. Las correspondientes ventajas del F1 Holstein Rojo x Cebú sobre el F2 Holstein Negro x Cebú fueron de 15.9 y 13.2 por ciento. Los tri-híbridos Pardo Suizo (Cebú x BON) y Cebú (Holstein Negro x BON) a pesar de haber tenido madres cruzadas, su peso al destete fue 3.3 por ciento inferior al Cebú, aunque a los 18 meses tuvieron una leve recuperación (2.0 por ciento sobre el Cebú).
