He was the only son of Ustad Abed Hossain Khan. He came from a family of notable musicians of the sub-continent. He is the grandson of Ustad Ayet Ali Khan (the youngest brother of Ustad Allauddin Khan), and nephew of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Bahadur Khan, and Musicologist Mobarak Hossain Khan.
